Quiz on Forehead Nodules

Which of the following do you think this woman has on her forehead?

  1. A wart

  2. Herpes

  3. A cyst

  4. A skin cancer.

The correct answer is c.)a cyst. This can be part of acne.

Well, what is a cyst, and what is acne anyway? Acne is a type of sensitive skin condition brought on by a clogging of the openings or pores of the oil glands – the sebaceous glands - to the surface of the skin. We Dermatologists often think of cysts as part of acne, and we now know that causes of acne include genetics - it runs in certain families - and also hormonal changes that start in puberty. And excess oil being produced by the sebaceous glands can cause pores to clog, leading to cysts.

First of all, my own Dermatology practice is in Cordova, TN (www.Rheumderm.com). Be aware that you can find a Dermatologist near you by going to the American Academy of Dermatology web site, then simply plugging your zip code into the Find a Dermatologist tab. The Dermatologist you choose can help you sort out which prescription options to pursue, be they oral antibiotics like doxycycline or topical products like what are called retinoids or azelaic acid or benzoyl peroxides, or even topical dapsone (“topical” means “on top of the skin”), for management of your own cysts or acne.

I come from a family of four Dermatologists – having developed cleansers and moisturizers to help people with complexion issues. My mother (Dr. Linda Woodbury) finished her Dermatology training at the University of Chicago in 1965. So in 2016, after 25 years of practicing Dermatology myself, I became President of Big River Silk™ Skincare Inc., to manufacture and distribute these same organic skincare products – which are now available throughout the United States and Canada (www.Bigriversilkskincare.com).

A good place to start is with a facial, neck or back cleanser that works well for your skin type:

*Dry skin often benefits from soaps or cleanser like Purpose® Bar Soap or Purpose Facial Cleanser, else Cetaphil® Cleanser, or Vanicream Gentle Facial Cleanser (now available from www.Bigriversilkskincare).

*Oily skin or combination skin often benefits from stronger cleansers like Neutrogena® Bar Soap or else a special skin gel cleanser that we manufacture at Big River Silk Skincare – called AmberSoy™ Soap Gel. AmberSoy fits easily into cleansing routines for people with both oily skin and combination skin, and it can be used as a facial mask – for 2-5 minutes prior to rinsing it off – for a really deep clean being free if dyes, formaldehyde, and propylene glycol. And it’s one of the few soap gels available commercially in the United States.

AmberSoy Soap Gel is available in Mint, Lemon, and No Fragrance Added, in 1 oz ($12.95), 2 oz ($18.95), and 8 oz ($59.95).

People with cysts and acne tend to benefit from use of a moisturizer once or twice a day. Options include Purpose® Facial Lotion and Aveeno®. Big River Silk Skincare Inc. also manufactures a helpful Alpha-Hydroxy (AHA) moisturizer - GlycoShea™ Facial&Neck Cream – containing Glycolic Acid - originally discovered in sugar cane and pineapple. AHAs promote a natural process in your skin called exfoliation. This is the process whereby old cells are released naturally from the surface of your skin, to be replaced with new cells. The result is that GlycoShea smooths the appearance of fine lines in your skin – acting as a type of Anti-wrinkle cream. It also helps to even out skin color and texture. GlycoShea Facial Cream is fragrance-free and dye free, with no formaldehyde nor parabens. 1 oz: $39.95; 2 oz: $59.95; 8 oz: $179.95.

All of Big River Silk Skincare Inc’s products are available for pick-up at our international headquarters, at 8143 Walnut Grove Road, Cordova Tennessee 38018, Monday-Friday, 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM.
