Tips from a Dermatologist to Get You READY for Autumn/Winter
We’re now in the autumn time of year, and the cooler air tends to dry people’s skin out, making them more prone to itching, and a type of rash called atopic dermatitis or eczema.
So if you or a family member is suffering from a rash of itching, there are a couple of tips:
Consider getting your skin condition properly diagnosed right away. Dermatologists can often pin down the trigger factor for an outbreak of eczema or itching by hearing your history, and/or by examining the rash. Maybe the root problem is a straightforward problem like skin dryness, or perhaps an allergy to a preservative or fragrance, or maybe even an infection such as a staph infection is at fault.

I've been diagnosing and figuring out people's skin conditions and rashes since 1988. It's a bit like being a detective to help pin down the cause!
Sometimes dermatologists set up what’s called allergy patch testing to check for allergic reactions. This type of testing involves setting up three appointments within one week, generally on a Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, because we have to place the allergy patches on your skin, then see you back several days later to read them.
Sometimes skin infections such as fungal infection can make eczema a whole lot worse. Sometimes dermatologists take a test called a skin biopsy to look for reactions to drugs you may have been taking, or we take a fungal culture (or a skin scraping), to look for infection.
If you do come in for an appointment, please bring some of the creams or lotions that you may have already been using for the condition, so we can sort out the best management plan. (www.Rheumderm.com or 1-901-753-0168; Info@rheumderm.com).
