Exfoliation Explained by a Memphis Dermatologist
by George Woodbury Jr. M.D. (11/23/2024)
Exfoliation is the process whereby your skin renews itself, by releasing older dead cells from the skin surface, from the outer layer of the Epidermis, so that new cells can develop from deeper layers. It’s a natural skin process of rejuvenation, coming from the Latin words: “Out of” and “leaves,” similar to the release of dead leaves by trees in the fall.
So what can you do about your own skin, to promote rejuvenation? Maybe you have Acne, or a skin condition called Keratosis Pilaris, or simply early wrinkling? What might you do to help these conditions?
A great place to start would be to find a “Best Dermatologist Near Me,” or “Best Dermatologists Near Me.” There are 20,000 of us Board-certified Dermatologists in the United States, and you can find one of us near you by going to the American Academy of Dermatology website, AAD.org, then plugging your zip code into the “Find a Dermatologist” tab. Often, you’ll find a biography of the doc, perhaps a photo, and a map to his or her office.
I myself come from a family of four Woodbury Dermatologists, so we have collectively had a lot of years to think about exfoliating options to help our Tennessee, Arkansas, and Connecticut Dermatology patients. My grandparents – Louis and Janice Plzak – were Illinois Pharmacists – so in 2016 I became President of Big River Silk Skincare Inc., the motto of which is “Science Simplifying Skincare™.
So at Big River Silk Skincare, we’re excited to announce new GlycoShea Facial&Neck Lotion and GlycoShea Hand&Body Lotion for 2025, with Refined Shea Butter blended with Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) Glycolic Acid, for an antiwrinkle cream effect. GlycoShea Facial&Neck Lotion is an exfoliating moisturizer that can complement prescription treatment for Acne, Keratosis Pilaris, Rosacea, and Actinic Keratosis. The AHA that penetrates into the skin the most easily is Glycolic Acid, an organic exfoliating moisturizer originally discovered in sugarcane and pineapple. So starting in 2016 I decided to incorporate Glycolic Acid into skincare.
Who would have imagined that a chemical for skin rejuvenation could come from a botanical source, like sugarcane or pineapple? That chemical is Glycolic Acid, which acts on the what’s called the cell cycle to promote new cell growth in the Epidermis. So the GlycoShea Lotions blend the skin-moisturizing properties of Refined Shea Butter, a natural product from an African tree, with the skin-smoothing antiwrinkle cream effects of Glycolic Acid, GlycoShea’s anti-wrinkle ingredient. We blend these components into what’s called emulsions, using some of the purest natural water in the United States, from the Memphis Sands.
The GlycoShea Lotions work well with use of Big River Silk Skincare’s AmberSoy Soap Gel as a skin cleanser. AmberSoy is a soft glycerine cleanser designed by Dermatologists. AmberSoy Soap Gel can be used as a deep cleanser in the morning, then GlycoShea Lotion can then be applied afterwards as an exfoliating moisturizer. Big River Silk Skincare also manufactures GlycoShea Facial&Neck Cream and GlycoShea Facial&Neck Oil as alternate versions of this product for people with drier skin.
Ambersoy is a particularly effective cleanser because it can be used as a face mask or body mask, perhaps 5-10 minutes before rinsing it off. It’s most suitable for people with oily skin or combination skin, for a particularly deep clean. Best of all, Big River’s AmberSoy has no propylene glycol, no sulfates, no dyes, nor parabens. Available in No Fragrance Cleanser. 1 oz: $14.95/2 oz: $22.95/8 oz: $74.95.
For more significant issues with Acne, consider getting a check-up with a Board-certified Dermatologist. Prescription treatments often include Retin A Cream or Gel (Tretinoin) or Azelex Gel. Sometimes oral antibiotics or even Accutane (isotretinoin) prove helpful. My own Memphis Dermatology practice is with Rheumatology and Dermatology Associates, 8143 Walnut Grove Road, Cordova TN 38018, or you can find a Dermatologist closer to you by going to the American Academy of Dermatology website, AAD.org, then plugging your zip code into the “Find a Dermatologist” tab.
