Let's Talk Feet: Big River Silk Skincare's GlycoShea Creams

Your feet are pretty important, allowing you to remain mobile, improving your general state of health. As a Dermatologist in practice for 28 years now, let me look with you at some of the common skin issues that affect people’s feet, to explain what can be done about them, and share with you a new foot moisturizer of Big River Silk Skincare (www.Bigriversilkskincare.com) - GlycoShea™ Hand&Body Cream.

Be aware that you should consult a Dermatologist if you have an actual skin disease. My own Dermatology practice is with Rheumatology and Dermatology Associates (www.Rheumderm.com), 8143 Walnut Grove Road, Cordova TN 38018 (1-901-753-0168). Or you can find a Dermatologist close to you by going to the American Academy of Dermatology web site, AAD.org, then plugging your zip code into the physician finder.

Athlete’s foot is a very common skin infection due to a fungus. Many Dermatologists do a test called a fungal culture, to try to determine what type of fungus is at fault, so that we can select from prescription antifungal creams or even pills.

Another common foot condition is onychomycosis, a type of toenail fungal infection. The nails start to separate from their nail beds, and nails can even be lost. We can often clear this type of condition with a course of antifungal tablets, such as terbinafine (Lamisil), fluconazole, or griseofulvin.

Eczema or atopic dermatitis is common on the feet, with dry scaly itchy areas that can get infected and lead to an outbreak of skin bacterial infection, called impetigo. Often starting in childhood, eczema can often be managed with prescription topical steroids creams or ointments. It can be similar in appearance to psoriasis, a genetically sensitive skin condition that can occur on any part of the body, and sometimes it takes the judgement of a Dermatologist to distinguish the two conditions.

Skin cancer can definitely develop on one’s feet, just like on any part of the body. If you have a new growth on your feet, one that’s enlarging or changing color, definitely get that lesion to medical attention. Remember that melanoma takes one American life about every 54 minutes. Early detection could mean the difference between a minor outpatient surgery and a life-threatening condition.
